Don't Forget About Spring Cleaning - Your Body

Spring Cleaning Is Not Just for Your House or Your Car… It’s for Your Liver Too

Spring has a very particular feeling to it.
Something in the air shifts.
The light changes.
We start opening windows.
We want to clear, sort, refresh, simplify.

Growing up, my grandmothers took spring cleaning very seriously. Cupboards and closets emptied, cleaned and reorganized. Furniture pulled out. Drapes and blinds washed. Clothing refreshed. Even the doors and walls were scrubbed.  

My parents are now in their mid-80s and still do it — every spring and fall.  And while that in-depth level of spring cleaning may be foreign to many today, somewhere along the way, I realized something important:

We may be pretty good at spring cleaning our homes … but most of us forget about spring cleaning our bodies, and especially our liver (and colon).

Your Body’s Master Filtration System

Your liver is one of the most remarkable organs in the body and it performs over 500 functions every single day:

  • filtering your blood
  • neutralizing toxins
  • metabolizing nutrients
  • regulating blood sugar
  • producing bile to digest fats
  • storing vitamins and minerals

I often think of the liver the same way I think of the filter in a home furnace.  If the filter in your furnace is clogged with dust and debris, the air quality drops, the heating system works harder, and eventually as the dirt accumulates … it doesn’t work very well at all.

You can turn the heat up.
You can change the thermostat.
But if the filter is blocked, the heating system still struggles.

The same is true in the body.  When the liver is overloaded or under-supported, the whole body feels it — energy, digestion, hormones, skin, mood, weight, inflammation.

Why Spring Matters (Chinese Philosophy)

In Chinese philosophy, rooted in over 5,000+ years of wisdom, each season is linked to specific organs and energy pathways; spring is associated with:

  • the Liver meridian
  • the Gallbladder meridian
  • growth, renewal, movement, and detoxification

Spring is seen as the natural season for liver support. Not because the liver only works in spring — of course it works all year — but because spring is when the body is most ready to release stagnation and reset its internal rhythms.

Nature is doing it all around us, and the body follows the same ancient logic.
