The Healing Power of Sleep
In the podcast episode 13, we talk about a topic I’ve been constantly asked about over the years, sleep!
I’m certain you’ve all heard of the Nobel Prize author John Steinbeck through books like "Of Mice and Men" or "East of Eden" so I think his words from "Sweet Thursday" really encompass this episode’s focus:
“It is a common experience that a problem difficult at night is resolved in the morning after the committee of sleep has worked on it.”
Sleep isn't just about working on our decisions, it's also all about working on our health too!
I consider sleep to be “most precious” because no matter how well we eat, how much we exercise, how well we stay hydrated, how successfully we cope with stress or how good our bathroom habits are; when we do not sleep properly - meaning both quantity and quality, our health is impacted.
Not only do we feel tired, often it is more difficult to concentrate, to focus or we have difficulty going through the day without many cups of caffeine. Ever so slowly, over time our body breaks down and that affects us in a variety of surprising ways including moods, hormones, cravings, stress levels to weight, skin, aging, and so much more.
Because lack of sleep affects us at so many different levels, we talk about:
- Why do we need sleep
- How much sleep do we really need
- Why we can't catch up on missed sleep
- Changes to our body when sleep deprived
- Yes there's melatonin, but what about the other sleep related hormones
- The busy schedule and sleep connection
- Many health benefits of a regualar sleep pattern
